The Hermitage

To the right of Rue des Pairées, heading up towards Resteigne, a nature reserve protects the Niaux wood and its hills. This is the place Edmond d’Hoffschmidt chose to establish a hermitage in the last century. Its small belvedere has stood the test of time and still serves as a hideout for the village children. Anonymous verses are engraved in the stone: “Happy is the man who, far from the bustle of cities / From the wicked and the foolish and servile souls / Knows how to live with himself in the midst of forests / Practise virtue, and enjoy peace there.” The two routes below will help you discover these places, and the introspective atmosphere that emanates from them: 4 km walk, 8 km walk.
